British people and food

British people are really classy people.

I'm quite serious.

Having watched Top Gear and a few British lecturers, I think they are really funny. Sometimes, a bit too classily-funny that simple minded Singaporean students like us may not understand. It's a bit of a shame but hey, they can be real funny.

Do I envy their elegance? Sure I do. Do I want to be like them, speak with English accents and make English jokes? Of course.

And you must be wondering if I'll go on about promoting nationalism. Truth is,

So yeah. No.

So besides British people, which was just a bit of an opening dish, we must quickly move on to something even more important. Food.

If you thought you were expecting British food because of the way I wrote the title of this blogpost, you are "much misled", as quoted from the famous Internet Meme, Doge.

Here's some of my absolute loves and hates food.

LOVES
1. I love pasta. Like, quite a lot. In fact, I could eat pasta all day. It's just the versatility and variety it can produce. Personal favourite is, of course, the aglio olio. I absolutely love its simplicity and just that simple appeal. Not saying I don't love bolognese or cream-based, but aglio olio brings out that beauty in pasta. Enough said.

2. I love ramen. Ramen is an art. It's handmade, it's expensive, but it's bloody worth it. Particularly if you're willing to spend more than $12, you'll get what you expect. I love the noodle itself, and most of the time, I'd eat it soupy. Haven't really properly tried dry ones, apart from the disgusting ones I had on Friday.

Speaking of which, here was my experience.

So there was this deal at a restaurant in Bedok Mall that allows free upsize of a certain ramen dish up to 5x the serving. Curious, we went to try and so I ordered 3x because I was hungry then. Obviously, once I got to 0.5x, I've already questioned my intentions. The ramen was this dry no-sauce ramen, and then you get a bowl of soup sauce that you dip into and then eat. The ramen was cold and really not the ramen I'd expect. Especially for $14.90, assuming you don't upsize at all, it's completely not worth it. The ramen really is not up to standard at all. So I've sworn to never go to that restaurant and try the ramen again; not because I couldn't finish the 3x challenge, but because the ramen is disgusting and simply not worth it. No wonder they had that promotion.

3. I also love chicken. Quite preferably over pork or beef or fish. Obviously, who doesn't love it fried? And then there's satay chicken which really is unique and just really really nice. Chicken can be prepared in so many ways, and while it's easy to whip up a chicken dish, it's not easy to do it well too. But then again, simple chicken dishes we can find, like the Chicken Rice, can be great too. Chicken rice is so nice.

4. I really love cakes and pastry in general. I don't have a very good tastebud but I really love cakes with a lot of whipped cream. It's fattening but I like. Cakes without whipped cream are just tragic. I also like doughnuts (OMG KRISPY KREME IS REALLY GOOD), cookies (I can bake them), muffins (also bake them before) and macarons (which I've never tried baking and probably never will until I'm idiotproof). And, of course, crumbles and pies. Crumbles are so nice. Apple crumble from HAN's is just amazing to savour.

5. I love chocolates. Dark ones. Like, I don't really fancy very very sweet chocolate. I'd rather eat dark ones, about 70-80%. Once I was curious, and so I decided to try the 99% dark chocolate. It was disastrous. Bitter beyond words. So even if I am a dark chocolate lover, 80% is quite enough. If you buy me anything that has dark chocolate in it, I'll eat it, and then kiss you repeatedly with dark chocolate on my mouth. That's how much I'll love you. Unconditionally.

(Just make sure you clean your face thoroughly after that.)

6. I love tomatoes. I know this isn't a very popular choice but I am in the minority that appreciate its sourness and just plain juiciness. It's just a funny feeling, and I like that. It's also quite good in terms of nutrition, so why not?

7. Generally, I love noodles more than rice. I'm noodle boy. Yet I can't hold chopsticks properly. But it's okay, so long it enters my mouth. I really like dry noodles, with a tinge of spiciness.

HATES
1. Cockles, clams, mussels. I cannot. I just can't bring myself to eat them. I can't eat anything that comes out of a shell. Apart from crab and lobster, both of which I really like. Just not these 3 or equivalent. They taste funny and fishy (literally).

2. Sea cucumber is beyond disgusting. I once ate and I puked. I understand that as a typical Chinese, I should love it. But I don't. It's sluggish and fatty.

3. Speaking of sluggish, I cannot stand pork fats. Like, I'm okay if it's braise properly and that fattiness-feel is eliminated, but I just can't eat it. It makes me feel sinful and just vomit-proof.

So there ya go, 10 of my love and hate foods.

And speaking of loves, here's a new blog theme! I love this song. It's Zedd - Find You, and it's just so upbeat yet slow. Idk, it's just this weird feel that makes you energised yet slightly emotional. So yes. This song, me gusta.
