Compliments? Really?

Sometimes people make compliments that make me doubt if they really are compliments. Like, are you genuinely praising me, or is there something between the lines?

1. "Oh you look handsome here"

Yeah okay, maybe nobody has said that to me. But I've just seen a girl-equivalent comment on Instagram. Which makes me wonder: so, does she not look pretty normally? I mean, "you look pretty here". That's like a direct jab at anyone who puts an extensive layer of filters. Or even those that don't even put filters and go natural. Just because they look good in that photo doesn't mean that you should put the word "here". "HERE". That's just wrong. If everyone said "you look pretty", I think it's much better of a compliment, isn't it?

2. "You're so smart!"

Firstly, let's clear that up. I'm no smartiepants.

Secondly, I don't see that as a compliment. Why does being intellectually superior becomes a praise? I don't get it. Everyone can be smart. If you do the right things. I am no believer in natural talent and stuff like that. Just do the right thing. You don't even need to work hard to be smart. You just need to work correctly.

Thirdly, normally when people say that, their next sentences then go something like "can you help me do this question?" Well, praising me before that just makes you look more of an arse because it's like you're praising in exchange for gains. I'd rather people just ask me straight up. Don't tell me I'm smart, because I'm not, and because I don't like how the system works of having-to-answer-your-question-after-being-praised.

3. "You're so skinny!"

It's not good for a man to be skinny. And I'd rather be slightly chubbier. So no, girls out there, please. Stop telling me I'm skinny. I know, and I don't take that as a compliment because I'm pretty much a bamboo stick. And you won't want to be this skinny, it's just too much.

Meh. Back to studying.
