I've been to two karaoke sessions in the past 2 months and I've thoroughly enjoyed myself.
It then dawned upon me that there seem to be increasing similarity in the types of songs that people always must sing at the karaoke. Okay, yes, I've only been to two sessions. But judging from the many people (or maybe just a few) that have continuously sung these songs in camp whilst showering (so maybe that's more of shower karaoke but, whatever, you get the idea), I think it's safe to come to a few conclusions about this.
1. Jason Mraz - I'm Yours
This song is AMAZINGLY OVERUSED. Honestly, I've never not heard this song whenever I go for a karaoke session. Yet I still join along singing anyway. Why? Because everyone in the world knows this song, and it is so easy to make even the worse of singers (like me) sound pretty damn good.
The notes are simple to pick up, the music itself is soulful enough (sort of). So, there, a man standing and singing, plus a good sound system, and you get all you want in a man really.
Maybe girls find guys that sing this song well attractive? I don't know. Either way, I just think this song is so overrated at the K. People need to move on from last decade...
2. Jay Chou - 那些年
If you're surrounded by Chinese-singing friends, then beware. This song is a must-have for every single Chinese singer at the K. I've never watched the drama, but judging from the countless amount of times I've seen the MV, it seems like a nice teenage love story sort of thing, so perhaps it resonates with a lot of people. I believe the drama was screened when I was in secondary school?
Seems like it because many people of my age know the song at the back of their brains whilst I mumble until the (first line of the) chorus comes.
3. Taylor Swift - Love Story
And can someone explain to me why it is always the guys that sing this song?
I mean, let's just look at this particular line of the chorus, alright. It says: "You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess".
Okay, yes, maybe guys just sing it for the lols and just like the song and its meaning rather than the perspective presented. Still, I find it uncomfortable to sing this particular song because it just sounds so... strictly female.
4. Maroon 5 - Sugar
And then the chorus comes and all the boys go supersonic.
I love the song, but let's be real - nobody can sing it in a karaoke session because we're all not punched in the nuts really.
I don't know, do you guys have any songs that you think have been sung many times in the karaoke?
Song of the day:
Lawson - Roads
(Aha. Something that isn't sang in the karaoke...)
