Classic is Overrated

No. Not talking about that.

Today, in a world where technological advances have been ever-accelerating and everyone is so into new trendy things, it somehow is ironic that we all become so gung-ho whenever the word "classic" is brought up.

It's happening everywhere, and people value it so much. So much so that classic has become an excuse to cover up for the failures of today (or tomorrow, for that matter).

Take a look at the music industry. Yes, there's EDM, and there's Pop, and there's very contemporary songs. But somehow whenever a songwriter or producer throws in a verse or two from the 1980s or samples from Mr Michael Jackson, everyone starts worshipping it. "OMG THERE'S A VERSE FROM RICK DEES' DISCO DUCK! I LOVE IT!" (Google that song if you haven't by now.) If this goes on, by 2040, someone by the name of Austin Mahone or Lorde is probably going to sample The Fox or Let It Go.

I'm probably part of this too, though. I like it when they sample older songs. But after a while, it merely becomes an excuse, a cover-up that everyone is running out of ideas.

And why is the past even considered better than what's now anyway? It's like "Oh it's classic so it must be automatically brilliant." It's not. If we're talking so much about future ideas, then why are we placing so much emphasis on taking things from the past?

It's not just the music industry. Even shops, restaurants and commerce - there is somehow a small group that simply don't let go of the past. Why? Yes, we preserve tradition, but we don't recreate it. If you're an old shophouse from the WWII, then fine, let's preserve the building because it has heritage and value to the society. Little kiddywinks will come by with their kindergarten teachers learning about Hitler at just 5 years' old. But don't attempt to recreate it! It becomes so... weird. I've seen some places trying so hard to be "old" that they just... don't work. Make it modern, make it neat, make it spacious, make it amazing. Simple?

Classic feels backwards to me. I mean, I value it, but I just don't see how it is so overvalued and overused today. Again, it seems like the world is attempting to hide the fact that it is coming to a standstill and only when we use the past can we amaze people.

Would I rather drive a Volkswagen Beetle or a Fiat 500? Nah. I'll go for the Mazda 3.

Song of the day:
Fall Out Boy ft. Foxes - Just One Yesterday
(I want to teach you a lesson, in the worst kind of way. Still, I'd trade all my tomorrows, for just one yesterday.)
(Y'all need to watch the entire Young Blood Chronicles man. It's all 11 MVs rearranged and chained up together to form a music-movie. And it's amazing.)
