Public Awkwardness

I am a very awkward person in public. I have so many problems and they all pop up in public... in full force. Sometimes I cannot help it, other times I wished I had a hole to dive straight into.

1. Height is a very big obstacle.

There's this common misconception that height is good. Very much like a pencil; the longer the better, because then you can sharpen it without worrying that it becomes as short as Lionel Messi. The trouble comes, though, when the pencil becomes a bit too long to fit inside your pencil box.

Get the point?

Yep. That's pretty much what I live with day in day out. The buses in Singapore, particularly the double decker ones, are amazingly deprived of height. So yes, I have to literally do a kowtow just to walk on the upper deck.

MRTs are another problem. On NE and CC Lines, the handrails are amazingly low. On EW and NS Lines, the doors are pretty much only able to sieve people below 180cm.

Can I recount the number of times I've knocked my head on a ceiling or overhanging railing? No, because I'm pretty sure all the constant knocking has caused my brain to be a bit damaged.

2. Drool

I know this sounds disgusting. But I have been having braces for the past 1.5 years, and throughout this period, I've found it extremely difficult to close my mouth when I'm idling. Like, I can be typing this blog post right now and in about 30 seconds' time, my mouth will automatically open and then... well... holy water comes out if I'm lucky or if evasive actions are not taken.

It's awkward, I remember having to slurp back my drool that was about to go onto my lips. A lot of times. It's disgusting, and this is why I'm looking forward to removing my idiotic braces really.

3. Cough

I fall sick very easily, particularly in the past 2-3 years. I can literally have a cold and it won't sod off for 3 weeks.

What I hate most about this entire cold package, though, is the cough part. You're sitting in a public bus, minding your own damn business. And then suddenly, your throat gets so irritated, dry and itchy. You start coughing very loudly. And then you find yourself being a public nuisance. So you try to suppress the cough by swallowing it back in. And then your eyes start tearing up and your cough turns from dry to wet. And then basically you end up looking like a child who has failed his math test and can't face his mum at home.

4. Balancing Act

Not always the easiest when you're over 6 foot, really. And when you have the balance of an inverted humpty-dumpty.

This happens not just on buses or MRTs, but also on escalators. Like, you'd think it'll be easy for me to stand on a step that moves at a constant speed. Well, every little jerk can make me unstable. Sometimes the handles don't move at the speed of the escalator steps. So I could fall.

Although I haven't. But I just might soon.

5. Staring

I come back from school, feeling extremely tired and drained. So I stare into blank space. Except... the space isn't that blank. I find myself staring at weird things. And at people. Unintentionally. At the wrong places.

It's not even planned. You know those times you just zone out and you just don't focus on what you're looking at? Yep. I've had that many times. And most of the times, my eyes drift to staring at very weird places. It's not what I want, but my eyes are bitches basically. So they're out to ruin me.

6. Swearing

Okay this maybe relates to just me, myself and I. As much as I do swear in school and in camp, I find it awkward and very rude to swear in public. There are kids around in the train, and I always slap myself mentally when the "s" or "f" words slip out.

Some people don't really give two shits about it, but I do. HYPOCRITE ME

And then there are times when you're on the bus with your teachers, and then you swear whilst talking to them. Yes. The conversation can get very silent beyond that point.

I really love this new blog theme. It's a move away from the music-centric themes I've always had, and the template is really fresh too. There's also a mobile version, too, for all you mobile-ers. Or whatever they call it.

Song of the day:

(So one last time, I need to be, the one, who takes you home.)
