Reflections After 3 Movies

Yes, I re-watched Our Times. Because it's great, okay?

So let's start with that movie first.

DISCLAIMER: THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. UNLESS YOU WANT ME TO SPOIL IT FOR YOU, PLEASE DO NOT READ.

1. 《我的少女时代》Our Times

The second time I watched it, I felt even sadder than the first. Because you always have the end in mind, that they won't be together (I won't say who and who, but it involves Zhenxin for sure).

Oh have I said how much I adore Vivian Sung, the Zhenxin in the movie? She's sooooo cute omg this is actually the first time I fanboy over a celebrity. And she's so pretty with long hair too. If someone like her ever pops up in my life I'd just be so delighted.

Anyway, back to the movie. Having the end in mind is quite sad sometimes, because you wait and wait for the feels to come and then when it does come and even though you are completely aware of it coming, you just don't get why you end up sobbing. I actually teared a bit when Zhenxin played the tape recording of Taiyu. Because when he said that particular line, which I will not quote because, again, I don't want to leak too much stuff, it resonated quite strongly with me. It's like, if I ever end up in that situation with whoever I used to like, I'll probably say it the same way he did. That's why it made me tear up a bit.

Yeah, I have a sad side too, you know.

Anyway, when you watch Our Times the 2nd time, you tend to notice a lot more. About how Taiyu sacrificed himself and became a guardian angel for Zhenxin. It's so cute, yet at times I find myself questioning why he did all of that without letting her know his feelings. But then again, I didn't let my feelings known; although you can also argue I probably didn't even do 10% of what Taiyu did for her.

In life, there won't always be - if at all - an Ouyang Feifan to tell your crush how much you've done for her behind the scenes. Nobody will know what you ever did for that person you once liked, because that's just the way it is. Which is a shame, I know, but if you ever like someone unconditionally, you will do everything even if it means not being recognised.

So yeah, this is a movie worth watching... twice. I really suggest y'all watch it twice because the 2nd coming will allow you to form a much stronger bond with the characters.

2. 《那些年,我们一起追的女孩》You Are The Apple Of My Eye

This came before Our Times, obviously, and there are clear similarities - as Our Times director Frankie Chen pointed out - in that "both are set in the 90s, both sets wore uniforms and took exams". Other than that, the way the story unravelled is quite simple - x loves y, y loves x, and then somehow the relationship never really took off.

This movie is more about missed opportunities, about how Chingteng was so reluctant to hear Chiayi's reply to him confessing his love for her, because he feared rejection and that it would ruin their friendship and the status quo. It's a shame, really, because if I were him, I'd listen to her reply. I know that I may like a person, but if I confess I'd rather she tell me what she thinks too. Even if it's a yes, no, or give me more time to think about it, I'd rather have an answer.

It's a huge shame, and I feel for Chingteng. He really did everything for Chiayi. And it's a bigger shame that Chiayi married a... rather unattractive fella who I initially thought was her father leading her down the aisle.

3. 《等一个人咖啡》Cafe. Waiting. Love

I actually felt great after watching this movie, mainly because it really didn't relate to me (as I'm sure it also did not relate to a lot of people). I felt glad that I didn't feel as attached to the storyline and plot as much as I did for the former 2 movies. This movie is absurd in its own way, there are ridiculous scenes and something as simple as being able to pull out a sausage and a beancurd from the back of a girl's head to signify that you like her and she likes you back is pretty.... ridiculous, really.

But I really like how Siying portrayed herself (again cos I'm a fanboy of Vivian) in the movie. You can really draw the similarities in the way Vivian acts in here and Our Times.

The movie starts off being ridiculous for the first 20 minutes, and then ends off... quite ridiculously too. But it's so sweet. It's like... you realise that you like someone else not for who she is, but because she resembled someone else you think you don't like. It's until she leaves that you realise that the first girl that you like is actually the one you wanted. This movie is kind of like that - except it really pulls it off so friggin well and in a very different manner of expression.

Again, because this movie is pretty ridiculous in terms of its cinematography and analogies, I wasn't too attached to the plot. It's not a bad thing. I still sobbed slightly when Siying cried in the end; Vivian looks so dejected and rather sadistically, cute, when she cries her heart out.

Oh and the last part is pretty funny! They got characters from 那些年 to appear because this movie actually shares the same director with that movie! Totally epic.

_________________________________________________________

Okay, basically, if you've skipped all of what I've said above because you don't want to get spoiled, just know that I like Vivian Sung a lot ohmagawd.

To sum up, Our Times really is the most relatable, You Are The Apple Of My Eye is quite relatable simply because it's from the guy's perspective so it's more straight up, and Cafe. Waiting. Love is just plain ridiculous but so romantically cute. I saw a tweet the other day and I completely agree: Our Times is about being one's guardian angel, You Are The Apple Of My Eye is about missed opportunities, and Cafe. Waiting. Love is about - as the name rather straightforwardly suggests - waiting.

Okay, off to Pulau Tekong for 8 long days for duties. I really dread it so much. I hate going outfield, and I hate not doing anything for 8 days straight. I wish that this will be the last time I have to do this 8-day duty. I really really really dread it. And it hasn't helped that I still hold a heavy heart after watching these 3 movies in the space of 3 days. It really doesn't help.

Song of the day:
Vivian Sung - 小幸运Chorus
Cos you know... she's so adorable. She actually wanted to be a singer, only to unexpectedly land the female lead role in Cafe. Waiting. Love. So yeah, she can sing pretty well! Yay
