My Cheena New Year

Firstly, HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR to all my fellow rice munchers and noodle slurpers!

Secondly, here's how mine went.

So obviously, the day before Chinese New Year was Reunion Dinner. No biggie, nothing huge, just a nice little steamboat x grill that looked a little bit like this:

Nah, I kid. Looked more like this:

Still not too shabby for a table of 4.

So anyway, in the process of grill them bacons, I realised that honey-glazing them makes them taste amazing. And I mean like, sublime. Extraordinary. The sweetness balances out with the saltiness. Viola. Not rocket science.

Day 1 was more of the usuals, going all the way to Sembawang to my cousin's 4-storey corner terrace for some money-grabbing opportunities. Obviously, being unmarried and all, it was a sure-win through the red packets.

Day 1 #ootd and I looked like I belong in the general election campaign.

Mercifully, my blackjack luck this year was tremendously better than it was last year, and as a result, I earned $10 from my brother alone. Needless to say, he wasn't the most delighted of people. He hates losing, especially to me. And it's not often I get the upper hand, mind you.

Yeah, that backcomb-with-a-random-wedge hairstyle was actually brought to Sembawang. Thought I wanted to try something wackier than the norm, but as you can clearly tell I look like a complete knob, while bro looked like an NTUC sales assistant.

Fast forward at 9pm and I ended up playing Game of Dice on my phone. Talk about socialising...

Day 2 was, again as per previous years, at my place, which meant I would not attend Jia Juen's big party with the rest of 4E1 for the 5th year in a row.

Started off with me sitting at the dining table straight after waking up, busy wrapping asparagus, enoki and carrot into a strip of bacon. Took me about 30 minutes. Then Mum came with a basket of beansprouts and instructed me to peel the edges off.

That bloody basket took me 2 hours.

Needless to say, by then, I was already pretty tired. I now have a lot more respect for hawkers who actually peel them, because if I were to have beansprouts on my menu, I'd either not peel them at all or throw them off the menu.

Then I took some time off to take ootd shots for day 2 by myself. Some of the photos you will see are unedited. while some were processed via VSCO. I'll let y'all decide...

Ignore the silver bar at the bottom. It was a Thirsty Hippo meant for my phone to lean on...

Played a bit of mahjong and lost - unsurprisingly - and then proceeded to play Texas Poker with the adults. It was a tat intimidating, going all the way down to negative balance (I had to borrow from my brother) before winning back everything after a huge windfall. In the end, as is with gambling, I lost a bit - about $25, to be precise. Not too bad really, considering my aunts lost in the three digits...

Opened my angbaos and saw new $50 and $10 notes. Obviously I was excited, just like every other kid seeing new bank notes even though they've been out since the start of last year.

And that was my wonderfully mundane CNY. I guess it's great to have these family gatherings, because I'm not that close to my cousins and we don't meet very often throughout the year, so this has been a jolly occasion for all of us to reunite and attempt to crack jokes at each other, only to fail awkwardly and for someone to leave the room to take some Green Tea.

Song of the day:
陳彥允 Ian Chen  - 等一個人到老 I'm Still Here
(If you were expecting a CNY song, you can go and angbao yourself.)
(By the way, who translates these Chinese song titles into English because I'm not sure how that title translates to "I'm Still Here". Should've been "Wait for one person till old". Lol. I kid.)
(等一個人到老 等到日夜都顛倒
等到太陽從西邊偷偷升起來了等到莫名奇妙 等到自己都笑自己的固執 老套 (很屌))
